The function of anger prepares us for a perceived threat and engages us ready for combat. Anger has been essential for human survival, to move us into action, asserting our valued boundaries. However, if we are too quick to anger or have spontaneous eruptions, that are difficult to control, we may be perceived as hostile and unable to develop relationships with others. Anger which is not expressed may be built up and eventually create illness or depression.
